WRITHLINGTON MEN’S SENIORS 8 CONGRESBURY 2
Writhlington and Congresbury were level on points going into this match – whoever won would be promoted from Division Three to Division Two. Cliffhanger or what?!
Both teams made one change from their previous encounter. Darren was away, so Terry Gillman stepped into the pressure cauldron, and partnered Richard Chapman. Chris Cox and Andy Jeffery made up the four.
With Andy’s nerves getting the better of him, and Chris in the process of going down with flu, they made hard work of beating J.L. and Gary, 7-5, 6-4. Meanwhile, Richard and Terry were having an epic match against Paul and Simon, which lasted for two hours! They lost the first set heavily, 6-1, then got their act together to win 6-3.
The third set was amazing – Congresbury had two match points (40-15, 5-4), but Richard and Terry somehow saved them and came back to win 7-6 in the tiebreak!
With four points in the bag, there was an air of complacency at half-time – Chris and Andy couldn’t lose to the B pair, could they? Despite Andy’s errors continuing, they still managed to get it together for a 6-3, 6-1 win and seal promotion. Simon fell over twice on his elbow, further exacerbating the injury he sustained in the first rubber. Richard and Terry had a valiant attempt, but had to lose 6-2, 6-4 to Gary and J.L.
All four Congresbury players joined us at the pub and were good company – let’s hope they get a wild card to be promoted with us next season!
Thanks to all eleven players who have represented the Club for the Men’s Seniors team – Chris Cox, Darren Thompson, Richard Chapman, Terry Gillman, Alan Gammon, Bryn Jones, Ray Clarke, Dean Taylor, Tom Craig, Lee Wood and Andy Jeffrey. We found the standard to be very good and next year we will need to be on our game to stay up!
