Writhlington Sixth Form student, Francesca Beg, is off to the United States this January to begin her career in university tennis.

Francesca, who joined Writhlington last September as part of the Tennis Academy Programme, is one of many students who are choosing Writhlington as a school which allows them to foster their sporting talent, while still maintaining their academic studies.

"I knew that in order for me to progress with my tennis and achieve well academically, I would have to find a balance. The tennis programme held at Writhlington was the perfect opportunity. The Coaches already knew my potential and Writhlington had a brilliant reputation for its sixth form courses."

Francesca says that her love for tennis probably comes from her dad, who would spend hours with her in our back garden, tirelessly dropping balls, returning volleys, pushing her to new limits and supporting her during the inevitable lows.

Fortunately, her talent was spotted early by her local clubs in Leighton and by Writhlington School, where she trained under the watchful eyes of Amanda Stonier and Mandy Baldwin. She progressed to join the Bath University Development Team where competing against the best players of her age, gave her the edge which allows her now to train in America.

"What made Francesca stand out was her remarkable timing and hand-eye coordination, which are rarely seen at such a young age. This, coupled with her sheer determination and strength of mind, are what has enabled her to compete at such a high level."

Francesca gained her place by applying through the Tennis Smart Programme and completing a series of rigorous theoretical and practical assessments, which really drew out her strengths and opened up a whole new world of opportunities.

"It seems that my hard work through the years is really starting to pay off! If it was not for the amazing Coaches, staff, volunteers and people at Writhlington, I wouldn't have stayed in the sport and got to where I am today. Thank you, Writhlington!"
