The Wells Stragglers played a return match on Sunday, 28th June at home to Saltford Golf Club. Unfortunately, the visitors were a few players short for the normal format and so a combination of Stableford and 4BBB matches were played with Wells being the overall winners, 3–2. Pascal Norman and Pete Michell halved, John Baker and Ron Davey won, Terry Searle and Philip Kenworthy won 3&2, Gary Leigh and Bill Marcham halved, with the final pairing of Simon Elliot and Clive Cornish, losing 4&3.
The July Seniors Medal was played recently on a beautiful day, with clear blue skies and minimal wind. The course was in fantastic condition, with plenty of run and quick greens which putted smoothly throughout. A good sized field returned good scores compatible with the conditions. Creditable nett 71s from Terry Searle and Stephen Payne were just outside the prizes, while Glen Crocker played to handicap, carding 79 (nett seventy) to take third place. Peter Leverick, the Seniors 2015 Captain, defied the usual mid-season loss of form that comes with Captaincy, with an excellent 77 (nett 67) and although this would normally be a winning score, Dave Hayward, the Seniors Vice-Captain, played some magnificent golf and shot 75 (nett 65) to win. Hayward's win has been on the cards for some time, as he has been playing well all season without managing to achieve the scores in Singles Medal competitions. The win means he becomes another single figure handicap senior golfer.
Wells Stragglers Team also hosted Dawlish Warren Golf Club on Sunday, 5th July. The weather was kind to start with, but the last hour saw heavy downpours of rain and even some hailstones. Wells turned in a good performance and won the match, 3.5–1.5. There were wins for Rogers and Kenworthy by 2&1 and Burgoyne and Marcham by 3&2. Pascal Norman, playing off five, and his partner, Bill Levell, won 3&2, despite giving their opponents seventeen and eighteen shots. Hockey and Boatswain secured a half and Searle and Chillington (Acting Captain for the day) lost two down.
Last Thursday was Wells Captains Charity Day, in aid of the Orchard Vale Trust and Multiple Sclerosis. In sun, then rain, then sun, the hardy golfers enjoyed the course at its very best. The winners, by a good margin, were 'The Plinkers', made up of Ron Hancock, Mike Metcalfe, Nick Wilson and Peter Leverick. Second were the 'Plumber's Mates', led by Baden Wilkinson. There were several two -spots, including one from Ladies Vice-Captain, Gill Magrath. The Chairman of Orchard Vale Trust, Chris Absolon, led the prizegiving, which was followed by a very successful auction and helped the club raise several thousand pounds for the two charities.
