This garden was bare soil just 18 months ago. The secret to its rapid growth? Planting hardy perennials which quickly establish giving the appearance of a mature garden within the season.

A number of hardy perennials thrive in our Midsomer Norton soil. Salvias love a sunny position and have the advantage that they are easy to propagate from cuttings. Hot lips with its distinctive red and white flowers is a particular local favourite and can be seen flourishing in many front gardens across the town. Verbena bonariensis with its delicate branching habit and mauve flowers loved by butterflies is a relatively recent addition to our garden centres and self seeds very freely, adding some welcome height. Another plant that forms an elegant and evergreen clump is stachys lanata or lambs ears, so-named for their furry silver leaves. They will rapidly cover the ground and have the advantage of being drought tolerant if you’re planting up somewhere you would struggle to keep watered.
