Villagers from Writhlington joined together on a cold and drizzly November Sunday morning to spruce up Writhlington village.
The litter pick was organised by Writhlington Action Group and was in addition to the litter pick organised on the last Sunday of every month in the village.
Writhlington is a surprisingly large village with streets and country lanes branching off Frome Road which runs through its centre so the litter pickers covered a lot of ground between them. They were using litter picking equipment purchased with a much appreciated grant from the Somerset Valley Dragons Den in the spring.
Between them they filled more than twenty five bags of litter, mainly comprising food and fast food packaging, from establishments such as McDonalds. As well as this, waste comprising building materials, too large to fit in a bag were collected. This sort of rubbish had clearly been dumped from vehicles passing through.
The litter pickers were rewarded with refreshments including delicious homemade cakes in a very festive looking Writhlington Village Hall.
Children from St Mary’s Primary School, Writhlington, Fosse Way School and Shoscombe Primary School helped with the ‘Autumn Clean Up’ and ‘Eco Warrior’ certificates were given to them, delivered to their respective schools.
The chairperson, Jane Evans would like to thank everyone of all ages who came out in cold and wet weather to help with the Litter Pick.
