Avon and Somerset Police are investigating reports of bogus child welfare officers
operating in the region after reports of parents with children being approached in Bristol.
Parents reported being approached by a man at a supermarket while with their children during school time.
It is alleged they were challenged about why their child was not in school and that the man claimed to be an Education Welfare Officer, but was unable to show any proof of ID.
As part of the investigation, it has been confirmed that official Education Welfare
Officers would only approach parents with children on the street when accompanied by a police officer as part of a truancy operation.
Police are now looking into this incident. Any parents approached by someone claiming to be an Education Welfare Officer has the right to ask for official identification.
