A team of volunteers from Bath-based engineering consultancy, BMT Cadence, have transformed the SWALLOW Community Café in Radstock.Fifty employees worked tirelessly to renovate and redecorate the café, which is owned by St Nicholas Church, on Thursday, 7th July.
SWALLOW is a local charity supporting teenagers and adults with learning disabilities. The aim of the café, which is staffed by SWALLOW members, is to support people with learning disabilities and allow them to gain useful skills and experience, whilst participating in meaningful work that benefits the local community.
Maggie Blake, Café Manager for SWALLOW, said:“I can’t believe what was achieved in just one day, the change is amazing – the café provides a space for the whole community to meet and now we have a lovely new building and outside area.”
Jobs that were completed included internal and external painting, the building of a new secure fence and security doors, the construction of a purpose-built BBQ, and the
installation of raised flower beds.
BMT Cadence’s Project Manager, Debbie Gillespie, commented: “Every year we choose a deserving local cause and the entire team devotes a day, around 500 working hours in total, to help out wherever possible. We chose the SWALLOW café as we felt that we could really make a difference in the time that we had. Giving back to our local community is an integral part of our company culture, and we’re proud to have been able to support this fantastic organisation.”
