On 22nd April, Emily Brown, Rupert Potts, Colin Coward and Nige Crutchley took part in the London marathon in the scorching sunshine, raising money for leading UK cancer charity for children, CLIC Sargent.

Readers of The Journal may remember reading of how the Crutchleys first met the CLIC Sargent team in 2011, when their youngest son, Ben, was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour.

Nige said: ‘“Lots of children do recover from cancer, but some, like Ben, don’t. Eleven families each day in the UK are told that their child has cancer – that’s eleven more families like mine, who will desperately need the help of CLIC Sargent.”

The runners all did remarkably well, considering it was the hottest London Marathon in history. All five thankfully finished with no injuries, but were sore for a few days after – and a little sunburnt.

They admitted to being disappointed with their completion times, but had very sensibly agreed the day before that it was about getting around and ‘enjoying’ it, rather than attempting personal bests.
