Local pensioners will no longer be able to use their bus passes to travel to Bristol Airport, it has been announced.

As of 1st July, Diamond Travelcard holders in B&NES will no longer be able to use their cards for free off-peak travel on services A1 from Bristol bus station and the section of the A4 route, which starts in Bath, between Bedminster Down and Bristol Airport.

Councillor Neil Butters (Bathavon South), Lib-Dem spokesperson on transport, commented: “It’s disappointing that the Conservative Council administration is targeting pensioners’ bus passes in order to make budget savings. Many residents will be worried that this change is a signal of further restrictions to come. What is more, this is being introduced at short notice and could lead to confusion and embarrassment for travellers, who may not be expecting to be charged. There are also concerns that this may lead to additional car traffic in an already congested area, with increased air and noise pollution. There is also a risk that the direct bus link from Bath, which is much appreciated by residents, may become uncommercial and be withdrawn by the bus company. I am calling on Cabinet members to work with colleagues in neighbouring Councils and monitor this situation carefully. Residents should be prepared for a succession of announcements of changes and charges as the results of the Conservative administration’s service reviews are announced.”
