SOUTH West-based pub operator and brewer Butcombe Group has completed a significant refinancing deal supported by NatWest.
Finalised in March 2026, the new deal is set to support the group’s further investment in its 118-strong estate of managed and tenanted pubs, boutique inns, and brewing operations across Somerset, Bristol, and beyond.
The deal will enable further modernisation and expansion of Butcombe’s pubs, inns, and brewery operations across the South of England and the Channel Islands with many across Somerset including The Archangel in Frome, and Broad Street Townhouse in Bath.
The refinancing will also mean the business pursuing strategic acquisitions, and facilitate a return of capital to shareholders.
With HQ in the South West, Butcombe Group employs 1,855 people and recently reported a turnover of £149-million.
This enhanced financial position is vital for navigating sector-wide challenges such as rising labour costs, inflation, and market volatility, while supporting the business’s long-term ambitions for growth and innovation.
The business is renowned for its award-winning beers, premium food-led pubs, and boutique accommodation, and continues to deliver robust results, with like-for-like sales growth of eight per cent in its managed pub division.
Butcombe Group stands out both locally and nationally for its community and sustainability focus. Its award-winning approach includes tackling loneliness, supporting apprenticeships, and pioneering sustainable practices rooted in the region.
Their “Butcombe Big Table Talk” initiative tackles loneliness by inviting South West residents to connect over tea and coffee in their pubs.
With a strong focus on training and apprenticeships they are successfully addressing industry skills shortages, providing clear career progression from entry-level roles to management.
Sustainability is also at the heart of the business, with pioneering practices such as using spent grain from brewing to feed local cows; that milk is then used to produce cheese served in Butcombe pubs, a circular economy rooted in the region, they add.
Jonathan Lawson, chief executive officer of Butcombe Group, said: "This refinancing marks an important milestone for Butcombe Group, reinforcing our ability to invest in our people, our pubs, and our communities across the South West.
“With the support of NatWest and our banking partners, we’re well placed to continue our journey as the leading premium pub and brewery operator in the region.
“We’re particularly proud of our work to tackle loneliness and offer meaningful careers through our apprenticeship programmes, and this deal gives us the platform to do even more.”
Stuart Allison, relationship director at NatWest, added: "Butcombe Group’s commitment to quality, innovation, and community impact is exemplary within the South West’s hospitality sector.
“This new facility demonstrates NatWest’s ongoing support for ambitious local businesses that drive employment, champion sustainability, and deliver outstanding experiences for customers.
“We look forward to supporting Butcombe as they continue to invest in the region’s communities and hospitality offer.”
NatWest is the UK’s biggest bank for businesses supporting the South West’s hospitality sector.
Through strategic partnerships and tailored financial solutions, NatWest is working to help businesses reach their potential, helping local communities rebuild and succeed.
