Over the past few weeks, we have enjoyed some bright, sunny and warm days and enthusiastic gardeners will have been busy in the greenhouse and garden.
The warmth generated behind the glass of a greenhouse or cold frame will have persuaded the planted seeds it is time to germinate, burst into life and grow. With the warm, dry weather of the past few weeks, digging conditions have been ideal and many will have planted their early potatoes and transplanted sprout, cabbage plants and flowers from greenhouse to garden. The hymn Jerusalem comes to mind and the lines “On England’s pleasant pastures seen” and “England’s green and pleasant land”. But, we all have to consider England’s climate and the sudden changes we have to consider and endure and this was never more evident than on 25th April, when we experienced sleet and snow during the afternoon and frost overnight. Many of us, I guess, could have lost our carefully tended young plants. So, where do we find replacements?
Well, Hayes Croft at Camerton is the answer. On Saturday, 13th May at 2 p.m. by kind permission of David and Kathleen Dando, Hayes Croft at Skinners Hill will welcome visitors to a Plant Sale and Cream Tea event. A good selection of flower and vegetable plants will be on sale and also some shrubs, too. This now well-established annual gathering to which all are welcome will have delicious cream teas for sale with proper home-made scones. In fact, some people visit just for a cream tea and to meet friends, old and new, and socialise. Whichever is your choice, you will be most welcome.
And the English climate? Warm and sunny weather has been ordered for the day, but, if there is a default, marquees are erected. There will also be a prize draw so, if not a plant, you could go home with a prize.
All proceeds will be to the Fabric Fund of St Peter’s Church, Camerton. For further details, please phone Kathleen on: 01761 470606.
