Well done to our readers who guessed correctly the Mystery Photograph from last week! The picture was showing ‘The Street’, Bishop Sutton, taken around 1955. Those who had the right answer were Ivor Davis, Simon and Norman Chard, Karen Thayer, Vince Baker, Mo Cuff, Jeff Parsons and Margaret Dury. Thanks everyone, for getting in touch!
Margaret Dury said: “The village in this week’s Journal is Bishop Sutton. The shop was The Drapery, run by Mrs Chapman. Her son, Dick, used to drive the van around the village, going from door to door, selling clothes and shoes.
“You would give him your order and he would write it down in his book, and bring it to you the next week. You would then pay two shillings or half a crown a week until paid off. Those were the days!”
So, think you can identify this week’s photograph? (Thank you to those who brought it in – it will give it away if we name you!) Answer in next week’s Journal. Email: [email protected] with your answer, and even a photograph of what the scene looks like today, or send it to us via Facebook: @MNRJournal.
Editor: Thanks to Bath Record Office and Radstock Museum, we are hoping to continue weekly with these photographs. However, if any readers have any to share, please do get in touch.
