Well done to all of those who guessed correctly the photograph from Bath Record Office which featured in last week’s Journal. We will be publishing a different photo each week of old photographic postcards uncovered by the Record Office, who found these in a scrapbook compiled by Richard Boodle. Can you guess this week’s, above?
Last week’s image was of junction of the High Street and Timsbury Road in High Littleton. Well done to Jeff Parsons, Eric Brain, Barry Maule, Joan Knott, Martin Horler, Nicky Green, Andy Shipp, Deb Hellyer and Kim Cole, who all guessed correctly!
Providing some insight into the picture, Barry Maule said: “We have only just managed to get four right so far, but this time we are sure we are right. The photographer set up his camera in Church Hill, High Littleton and took a brilliant photo of ‘The Batch’. The signpost in front of the tree is pointing through the village in the direction of Bath and down towards Timsbury Bottom and Paulton.
“Many of us High Littleton old folk can still remember coming home from school and climbing up on to the Batch to play around that lovely old fir tree. According to our parents, the tree was struck at the centre by lightning sometime during the war and severed half way up, leaving just the lower branches standing.
“The shop to the left of the horse and cart was closed well before we started school in the 40s and 50s but the Old Market Tavern behind the tree was still open during the 1950s and early 60s. At some time in the past, a market used to be held around the Batch.”
Eric Brain added: “As it is a post card, I suspect from its style it might be a Collinson photo. Miss Collinson lived with her father at Northend, Clutton and was an early 20th century pioneer photographer, travelling the area with her camera in her father’s pony & trap and selling the photos commercially as postcards. Later, for a short time she lived in the cottage next to Clutton Rectory. She passed away in Cambrook House.”
So, think you can identify this week’s photograph? Answer in next week’s Journal. Email: [email protected] with your answer and even a photograph of what the scene looks like today, or send it to us via Facebook: @MNRJournal.
Such has been the popularity of this feature – we have been amazed by the amount of family debate and arguments in the pub that these have caused, that we would love to have a supply that we can call upon when these run out.
If you have any you can share with us, please do let us know and we can carry on! Images need to be high resolution and supplied as a .jpg file.
