Last week saw many different events and media coverage of the
anniversary of the murder of MP, Jo Cox. In her maiden speech in the House of Commons, she said the now iconic phrase: “We have more in common than that which divides us,” and this was the catalyst for more than 100,000 Great Get Together events around the country, all designed to encourage communities to come together, forget their differences, get to know each other better and enjoy each others’ company. On Saturday, 17th June, around 150 people came together in Chilcompton for The Great Chilcompton Picnic.
It was a baking hot day and villagers, plus friends, sat under trees enjoying each
others’ company, meeting old friends and making new ones. The children played cricket and parents quickly joined in, took over and it all became a bit competitive! Writhlington Sports centre provided an inflatable tennis court and target practice, which everyone enjoyed.
It was a wonderful afternoon, and an event it would be lovely to repeat each year. In fact, the next opportunity for the community to come together in Chilcompton will be at the St John’s Church Fete on Saturday, 1st July, 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.
