Thank you to reader, Diane Shearn, (née Helmore) who has been in touch with us, here at The Journal, to share a Christmas Memory.

She says: “I have just received a Christmas card from an old school friend, designed by Roger F Jones, depicting Welchs’ in Midsomer Norton.

“Who could forget this iconic store and the history that went with it. I remember all of the shops and tradesmen in Midsomer Norton and the service they provided.

“I wonder if any of my little friends from St John’s Infant and Junior School remember the 1951 Nativity play.

“Amongst the stars were Paul Barnard, Angela Britten, Geoffrey Carver, Hazel Dando, Sandra Dando, Diane Doughty, Geoffrey Ford, David Foster, Carol Jeans, Gilmour Jones, Bobby Jukes, Lorraine Jones, Derek Nash, Michael Perry, Jackie Purnell, Carol Pymm, Mavis Rodd, Joan and Mary Rodd, Jenny Snelling, Roberta Turner, Valerie Wallace, Dianne Watts, and Roy Wilton.

“It has been over fifty years since I left my roots. You can take the girl out of Midsomer Norton, but you can’t take Midsomer Norton out of the girl!

“To all of my (now grown up) friends from St John’s, and latterly, Somervale Sec Mod – if you remember me, I wish you all a Happy Christmas.”
