As spring arrives, so the hedgelaying season comes to an end, allowing birds time to build nests, lay eggs and hatch at least one brood of young.
The Mid-Somerset Agricultural Society held their annual hedging match on the Royal Bath & West Showground.
Champion at this match was Mike Reed, of Chew Magna, and in the novice class, Ben Pritchard, of East Harptree, was third.
The next match was the Wrington & Burrington Hedging Society 187th match held at Holt Farm, Blagdon, the home of Yeo Valley, by kind permission of Mary Mead. The judges were Michael Ford of Nempnett Thrubwell, Ian Conibear from Devon, Phil Avery, from Churchill, and Peter Yeats, from Wales.
The Championship was won by Colin Clutterbuck of Stanton Drew. Ben Pritchard, of East Harptree, was second in his class.
As part of the day’s competition, a produce show is held – this year it was judged by Jon Wilson, Farm Manager for Yeo Farms. This reflects the agricultural base that created such a day of competition.
