Writhlington Flower Show Committee have organised two fundraising events to help fund and support the 131st Annual Flower Show and Fete, which will be held on Saturday, 15th August.

A Jumble Sale has been arranged for Saturday, 8th February at 11 a.m., in Writhlington Village Hall.

A large collection of jumble, bric-a-brac, toys and household goods have anonymously arrived and been deposited, once again, in the dining room! These will be transported to the Village Hall, where you can come and find lots of bargains, recycle, which is good for the planet, and when you have finished bargain hunting, you can enjoy a tea, coffee and homemade cake.

Our Quiz Nights are very popular, so the committee have planned the next Fun Quiz Night for Saturday, 28th March at 7 p.m., for a 7.30 p.m. start at Writhlington Village Hall. All teams very welcome.

The Flower Show Committee were recently saddened to hear of the loss of a Life President, Gloria Jenkins.

Mrs Jenkins has been a resident of Writhlington for over fifty years, and will be remembered by many of us as Mrs Gloria Evans (Mrs Stephens), Headmistress of Writhlington Secondary Modern School.

In the 60s and 70s, along with her then husband, Tom Evans, the couple made and left great influences on the school and its pupils.

As Headmistress, she was petite, very well dressed, smart and her hair was always immaculate. Twiggy miniskirts and black Max Factor Mascara were frowned upon, as many girls will recall who stood outside her office.

She taught needlework and was a great seamstress. At the time, Writhlington Secondary Modern had an outstanding craft and arts department, along with domestic science, woodwork and metalwork. The school also had its own pottery de- partment and kiln. She was a talented potter and many of her pupils’ pots and pieces of pottery could be seen displayed around the school.

The school, at this time, was very progressive, with Mr Evans, rural Science

teacher, who ran a thriving farm with Dexter cattle, goats, pigs, rabbits and bees. Many pupils of the time will remember taking the goats and the cows to country shows, especially Frome Cheese Show, where many prizes were gained.

Mrs Jenkins had long been a long supporter of Writhlington Flower Show and for a number of years judged the needlecraft section of our Annual Show.

A few years ago, Mr and Mrs Jenkins very kindly presented to the Flower Show Committee, the Gloria Jenkins Plate for best Exhibit in Needlecraft, a lovely reminder of her time given and support of the Flower Show over many years.

The Flower Show Committee send their sincere condolences to Cliff Jenkins and family.
