On Friday, 30th June, Connaught Lodge of Freemasons, based in Midsomer Norton, were pleased to receive members of the “Somerset Masonic Cycling Club” to their Masonic Centre.

They were accompanying students from Frome College, who are taking part in the “Duke of Edinburgh award scheme” and were cycling as part of their Silver Qualification. It was also an opportunity for the DofE participants to learn about Freemasonry, which has for many years financially supported the Scheme.

In fact, in the last year alone, Somerset freemasons have donated £10,000 to the DofE “Bursary” programme. This money is used to finance, and help disadvantaged young people to take part in the Scheme, this year, so far, one hundred and fifty six youngsters in Somerset have benefited.

On arriving at the Midsomer Norton Masonic Centre, all riders gratefully enjoyed bacon and sausage sandwiches, cakes and tea.

Once refreshed, the visitors were treated to a tour and explanation of the “Temple”. This included a brief explanation of what Freemasonry is all about, and its connection, and support of many charitable organisations like the “Duke of Edinburgh Awards”.

From the interest, and number of questions asked, the students certainly found the experience rewarding.
