Another real Mystery Photograph this week, given you are all doing so well at providing the Museum with lots of valuable information (which they are thrilled with, by the way!) Thank you to everyone who continues to get in touch with us about these pictures, as it is really useful for the Museum to solve these mysteries! Another one this week (see right): [email protected]
For last week’s Mystery Photograph we’ve had some conflicting information – but we think it was taken of a Coal Board team, and could be skittles, crib or shove ha’penny.
Sandra Fear says: “Back row, first on the left, is my Grandad, Fred Brain – he had seven children and the one still alive (Gordon) does not know the year, but thinks it could possibly be at the Railway Pub and a presentation evening for Crib or Shove Ha’penny, which he used to play. He worked for the Coal Board.”
Catherine Jones adds: “For the mystery photo I believe that the gentleman under the red banner is my Great Grandad, Jack Jones. And we think the event was something to do with the Midsomer Norton shove ha’penny organisation. He worked at the Norton Hill Colliery and could have been something to do with that.”
Clive Kingman says he thinks the photograph was taken in the early fifties at the St John’s Ambulance Hall, Midsomer Norton, for the coal board team at Norton Hill colliery. They used to play at the Dolphin Inn, Welton, on Friday nights – at that time the landlord was a relation, Jimmy Kingman.
He has identified some of the men in the picture as: second from left, Jim Clare, from Farrington Gurney, Charles Maggs, also from Farrington, Gilb James, Herbert Beard, Edward Stenner, Manager of Norton Hill Colliery, Jack Jones, Mr Baber and Mr Jefferies. Front row: Lionel Kingman (his father), Herbert Maggs (centre), Lemo Owens, Cliff Richards and Peter Brimble.
Thank you, everyone!
