After many months of closure due to flooding, the car park at the rear of Writhlington Village Hall has been refurbished, thanks to grants from Radstock Town Council, Radstock Big Local and the Ralph and Irma Sperring Charity.
The car park can now be used by visitors of the hall and the play park, although permission has been granted for parents to collect and drop off their children attending St Mary’s School.
However, this is not a public car park, as it is situated on private land, and vehicles will be monitored and owners will be asked to remove their vehicles, should they be using the car park without authorisation.
In a bid to ease congestion in the village during school drop-off and pick-up times, the Ward Councillors of Writhlington are appealing to local residents to walk their children to school where possible. They have been made aware of some parents who are driving even the short distance from Manor Road to both St Mary’s and Writhlington School.
Radstock Town Councillor, (Writhlington Ward), Keith Tyrrell, said: “The refurbishment of the car park has been a long time coming, but with perserverance we have managed to see this project through; and with thanks to local grants. However, we still need parents’ support to ease traffic congestion and to keep the area safe.
“Wherever possible, we are asking those who are able to walk their children to school to do so – extra cars are only adding to the problems of congestion and parking, which is not helpful to the residents, who complain regularly to the Ward Councillors with
regards to these issues.”
The work done to the existing car park at the back of Writhlington’s village hall means that it now has an all weather surface and cost just over £26,000 to complete. It took many months of campaigning to find the money through various grants, and the set back after time ran out to make use of the developers at Knobsbury Lane, who had offered to help with the resurfacing before they left the area.
