A DRUG alert has been issued for the circulation of “contaminated” blue pills in and around Somerset.

Public Health England issued the alert on Monday, June 30, after receiving reports of blue pills being sold as Valium with likely opiate contamination, threatening a significant risk of overdose to users.

The warning follows the deaths of three men in June which are believed to be linked to blue pills being sold illegally as Valium.

A spokesperson for Somerset Council said: “On Monday (June 30), the system issued a targeted drug alert to services supporting people who use drugs and alcohol, including homeless hostels and other frontline support services.

“This was following reports of blue pills being sold as Valium, which are likely contaminated with an opiate and pose a serious overdose risk.

“People are advised to avoid unknown pills, not use alone, carry Naloxone, and seek emergency help if overdose symptoms appear.

“This alert was issued following discussion at the Local Drug Information System Panel – a multi-agency group (including Somerset Council) that monitors emerging drug trends and coordinates timely responses to reduce harm in the community.”
