In the run-up to Christmas, the media focused on the increasing dependency on foodbanks in the UK.
Eager to help their local community, Writhlington School students asked Mr Everett, Executive Headteacher, if they could arrange a collection of items for the local foodbank. Mendip Studio School, located on the Writhlington campus, was keen to work with Writhlington School and donations from both schools were taken to Somer Valley Foodbank on the last day of term.
Helping to combat poverty and hunger, Somer Valley Foodbank works with care professionals to identify people who need help; they can provide emergency food and non-food items and support.
Students, supported by their parents, provided a wide range of items, from baby nappies, pulses, tinned vegetables, deodorant and toothpaste. The students then sorted these items, boxing them up so that school staff could take them to the foodbank.
The collection was such a success that students are in the process of arranging another collection for Easter.
Clare England, Deputy Head, said: “I am delighted by the huge effort of our students and parents which will mean that people in our community continue to receive the support they need.”
