Last Friday, Welton Primary School in Midsomer Norton held a very successful Careers Event as part of National Careers Week.

The school is currently focusing on STEM learning; the subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths, and the careers event was a great opportunity for the children to meet people from the world of work who use these subjects in their jobs.

They were lucky enough to meet a wonderful range of people, including a Submariner Lieutenant Commander, an air traffic computer programmer, a bridge designer and risk analyst.

The children were enthralled with the event, and the school are continuing to look for volunteers and companies who might be able to join them to share their enthusiasm for STEM subjects in the future.

The guest speakers were:

• Lieutenant Commander Paul Goddard – Royal Navy Engineering support to Submarines based in Her Majesty’s Naval Base (Clyde)

• Rob Wood – Sales Engineer, GOM UK Ltd

• Chris Martin – Senior Software engineer, Altran

• Jack Cook and Carmen Anderson – IT Operations and Project Support, DAC Beachcroft LLP

• Andrew Middleton – Senior Project Manager in Critical Safety Engineering Design (also STEM ambassador)

• Peter Campbell – Certified Risk Professional, Society for Risk Analysis

• David Hayward – Principal Engineer, Transportation, Bridges and Structures, UK&I, AECOM

• Kirstie Paul – Air Support FW MAS, Future Capability Def-Isl Project Manager.
