THE return of beavers to local rivers and fields will be explored this autumn in a film screening and discussion at the Merlin Theatre.

Frome Town Council and Frome Beaver Watch are hosting the evening, bringing together local voices, nature lovers, and rewilding experts to discuss the impact of beavers on our landscapes.

The film explores how these animals interact with people, land and water, and how we might find a way for nature and communities to thrive together.

Beavers build dams, slow down water and create amazing wetland habitats – but not everyone agrees on where and how they should be reintroduced. Balancing the Scales looks at all sides of the story.

After the film, a panel discussion will take place, featuring a mix of community representatives, nature enthusiasts, and rewilding experts.

Sophie Ricardo, a Frome resident and founder of Frome Beaver Watch, will provide an update on what’s happening with beavers in the area.

Cllr Sara Butler, Frome town councillor, will reflect on how nature fits into the Council’s plans for a greener, more resilient town.

Derek Niemann, Guardian Country Diaries writer and conservation author, will offer a historical and cultural perspective on nature in the UK.

Nick Patel, nature guide and host of the Wilder Skies podcast, will share insights from a rewilding perspective, highlighting his passion for wildlife.

Charly Le Marchant, from Pocket Full of Acorns, is a Frome-based environmental filmmaker dedicated to restoring woodlands and balance in nature.

Martin Blain, representing the Frome & District Angling Association, will provide the perspective of the local fishing community on river health, water flow, and working with nature.

The event forms part of Frome Town Council’s efforts to support biodiversity, address the climate emergency, and engage the community.

Tickets cost £5 and can be booked through The Merlin Theatre at www.bit.ly/balancingthescalesscreening.
