Seedy Saturday returns this Saturday, 14th March at Timsbury Conygre Hall between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The ‘seed and spud spectacular’ offers growers at all stages and ages a fun and practical way to exchange seeds and tips; buy local products; and get involved in community activities.
The main focus of the event is the seed swap, where visitors are encouraged to bring some of their home-grown seeds and leave them for others to browse while taking something new home to try. This often includes heritage varieties that haven’t been in commercial production for years, such as Veitch’s Pea, or localised varieties developed through the selection of seed over many years to produce a truly unique variety, like the Farmborough Bean.
Now in its 11th year, this community event has stalls selling seeds and potatoes alongside spring bulbs, fruit bushes and trees, cottage perennials, herbs, plus home-made produce, local crafts, plant-based products and gifts. There will also be expert talks and advice about weeds, community farming and com- posting, family candle-making workshops and the kitchen café providing refreshments and delicious homemade treats.
Event organiser, Sam Ross, says: “Up to 500 people attend every year, not just from the
local area, but many parts of the UK, as well as France and Belgium. This must-attend event is for seed swappers, amateur gardeners, allotment-holders, horticulturalists, and anyone passionate about the environment. The friendly, local and sustainable ethos encourages everyone to have fun growing plants, alongside saving and sharing seeds and stories with others
in their community.”
Seedy Saturday is run by a small group of local and dedicated volunteers and is sponsored by Pennard Plants, Beans and Herbs, and The Connies Tea Rooms. Entry to Seedy Saturday is just £1, with children under 16 free. Visit: www.seedysaturday.org. uk for more details, see also the advert in The Journal’s ‘Shall We Go Out?’ section.
