Come and see Martin Horler, dressed in full scarlet livery, present an evening talk on the Role of the Royal Mail Guard.
He explores the postal system from 1784 to 1840 with the coming of the railway. He will tell of the revolutionary introduction of horse drawn Mail Coaches, which were
provided by contractors, with regular changes of horses,
keeping to a strict timetable, exempt from tolls and carrying an armed guard. He will bring along the weapons provided to guard the mail and will sound the 51 inch coach horn to demonstrate the calls blown by the guard. The talk will be on Tuesday, 1st November, 7.30 p.m. at Radstock Museum, visit: www.radstockmuseum.co.uk for details.
