Jess Young, from Timsbury, has been growing her hair for the past three years. Knowing that she wanted a ‘pixie’ cut, she thought that in tribute to family and friends who have undergone cancer treatment, she would grow her hair first and then donate it to The Little Princess Trust, a charity that makes real hair wigs for children and young people with hair loss due to cancer and other conditions.
Jess says: “Most people have experienced cancer, whether they have had it themselves, or supported family members or friends through it. It is physically and mentally draining, but getting through the treatment, whether it works or not, shows strength and courage.
“Many of my family members and friends have had cancer. Most recovered, but some sadly passed away. This has made me want to fight back.
“I’ve always wanted to have a ‘pixie style’ hair cut. Rather than wasting hair, I realised that I could do something good and grew it for over three years, so it could be made into a wig.
“I hope to raise at least £500 to cover the cost of making a wig; it costs between £300 and £500 for a wig to be made. The Little Princess Trust also fund much-needed research into childhood cancers.
“I had my hair cut on 17th August. It feels very strange getting used to having a short style, but I would really encourage anybody to donate their hair to this charity. It feels great to know that you are helping somebody feel confident and like they ‘fit in’ with other people their age.”
The Little Princess Trust added: “Real hair takes so long to grow and is a precious gift. It gives confidence to young people going through a very difficult time, and it helps them to feel special and supported. This has been a commitment for Jess – we are extremely proud of her!”
Jess has so far raised £321 of the £500 total, which will enable the wig to be made. If you would like to help, visit: www.gofundme.com/jess-hair-cut-and-fundraiser-for-littleprincesstrust
