The Wellow Group of the Riding for the Disabled Association, based at Wellow Trekking Centre, is looking for volunteers to help support local disabled riders.
The RDA is a voluntary organisation which works with horses and ponies to promote opportunities for therapy and enjoyment for people with disabilities. Supported by qualified and experienced instructors and teams of dedicated volunteers, riders benefit from the activity, challenges and fun that horses bring.
Every year, many people with disabilities discover through RDA just how much they can achieve. Some people are referred by a medical professional, while others simply want to enjoy riding in an environment they find supportive and welcoming.
The Wellow Group of the RDA is a relaxed and friendly group, which has been based at Wellow Trekking Centre for more than 25 years, catering for riders whose ages range from pre-school to pensioner. Sessions are held in the indoor school and riders are also taken for hacks along the disused railway line. Volunteers help with getting the ponies ready and assist riders with activities when riding.
All volunteers will be made very welcome, whether you can spare just an hour or stay for the day. Sessions are held Monday to Friday during term time, starting at 9.45 a.m., with a break for lunch and the last ride finishing at 2.30 p.m. Those who are able to help with the new Wednesday sessions, which start on September 20th, will be especially welcome.
Helping at Wellow RDA is a rewarding experience, where volunteers are able to meet new people and enjoy interaction with the riders and horses. It is not necessary to have experience with horses or of helping people with disabilities, as training will be given and there is always a friendly face to help and guide you.
So, if you think that you could help, please call Anne Allen on: 07713 639125 for more information, or see their website: www.wellow-rda.org.uk.
