The last day for Santa Specials at Midsomer Norton Station was ‘special’ in spite of the gloomy, misty weather.

Children waiting to see Santa had already had a festive ride behind Austin, the little steam engine and anticipation was in every face. The gazebo by Santa’s grotto was festooned with lights and volunteer elves served refreshments.

Strict Covid spacing and masks protected everybody at the station and Santa was in his cosy space on board the coach by the patio. Lots of parents were very pleased to be able to take their families to see Santa in a safe outdoor space. The train had been nicely decorated for Christmas, elves were dishing out mince pies and mulled wine and there was a festive feel everywhere.

Department Head, Gail Coleshill, paid tribute to all the volunteers who had made this such a happy family occasion.

“It’s not just about trains or even Santa. To make this a jolly family time involves a lot of preparation, decoration and sheer hard work and I say thank you to all our volunteers. That is not just those who help at events, but all those people who come here all the year round.

Local Mum Charlotte can be seen in the photo with Jonah, Primrose and Dimetri looking forward to seeing Santa (below).

Sadly, due to the current situation with Covid combined with the need to do the best to protect the safety of passengers and volunteers, the Steam and mince pie special on January 1st was cancelled. The mulled wine and mince pies have been donated to Paulton Hospital and the Food Bank in Wells.
