The Diabetes UK Mendip Support Group will be hosting an event on 11th March at the Somer Centre, Midsomer Norton, to highlight the technological advances that have been made in the treatment of diabetes over the past fifty years.

A range of equipment will be on display, from blood testing machines to older style syringes that will highlight how the management and treatment of diabetes has changed.

Developments have been significant, with blood testing machines, which are vital for people living with diabetes to be able to ascertain whether their blood sugar is too high or too low, from taking five minutes to give an inaccurate result to the current blood test meters that give instant, accurate and reliable results, as well as continuous glucose monitors that constantly reads the user’s blood.

There will be presentations from diabetes support charity, Input, who will provide an

update on the most recent advances in diabetes treatment and the support available to obtain access to insulin pumps and continuous blood glucose monitors. In addition, there will be the opportunity to speak with representatives from the companies that

produce the blood meters, who will also provide short presentations. We hope to have a diabetic specialist nurse from the Royal United Hospital, Bath, available to answer any questions.
