The Iron Man, a cleaning service based in Frome, is raising awareness for an initiative set out to help the homeless keep warm during the winter months.
The cleaning service took to Facebook this week to share their ‘Iron Man survival blanket’, which aims to help the planet by recycling and help humanity by keeping the homeless warm.
The company wrote: “Did you know it takes eighty years for a crisp packet to decompose? Did you know that one hundred and fifty of them can be ironed together and turned into a survival blanket for a homeless person and will help to keep their sleeping bag dry and insulated?
“Here at The Iron Man, we think the most daring thing is to create stable communities in which many people can be helped.
“The Iron Man are collecting crisp packets and will be making these blankets. If you can collect them between now and Christmas, we would be happy to take them off your hands!
“Please send all blankets and strips of five bonded crisp packets to our postal address.”
Miley Porritt, pictured, who started the initiative, told The Journal: “The process has been very rewarding. I love seeing the positive impact it has had.
“I started this for Christmas last year, in 2020, and so far we have made 2,000 blankets.
“What was meant to be a Christmas project last year has been my full-time job ever since and now we go all year round!”
All they are asking is for you to wash the crisp packets with warm, soapy water and open them out so that they are landscape before posting them.
Alternatively, if you would like to have a go at ironing the crisp packets yourself, they have guides on their Facebook page to help you.
The Iron Man are asking that people send as many crisp packets to them as possible, by 3rd December.
