At their public meeting on Monday evening this week, Midsomer Norton Town Councillors considered a proposed name change for the South Wansdyke Leisure Centre in the town, which has been taken on by the Writhlington Sports Trust.

As of July, Writhlington Sports Trust, who also run the sports centre by Writhlington School, will be responsible for the leisure centre in Midsomer Norton, which is set to have its facilities updated in the near future.

Midsomer Norton Town Council were approached by the Writhlington Trust and Bath and North East Somerset Council about changing the name of the centre to either the South Wansdyke Sports Centre, in keeping with the centre's current name, or Midsomer Norton Sports Centre.

Town Councillors voted to change the name to the Midsomer Norton Sports Centre.

Councillors also discussed appointing a representative to the Writhlington Sports Trust, nominating Cllr Steve Plumley.

The Council took the opportunity to discuss the finances involved with various local projects, including the refurbishing of St Chad's Well and the monument located there, as well as the Garden of Friendship at the Catholic Church, which is to see a number of changes, including new fencing and displays of the original architectural drawings.

There were also a number of grant applications discussed for Frack Free Somer Valley, Keep In Touch Paulton and Somer Valley FM. Councillors found that their guidelines state that groups outside Midsomer Norton have to be able to prove that they work for the benefit of Midsomer Norton residents and so were unable to accept Keep in Touch Paulton's application at this time, though Councillors were keen to support the organisation in the future if they were able to reapply.

Frack Free Somer Valley had also applied for a grant, however, as Midsomer Norton Town Council doesn't have a policy on fracking, they were advised by the Clerk to decline. Community radio station, Somer Valley FM, were awarded their application of £3,697 to supply air conditioning units to the studios and IT rooms.
