CAN you guess where this week’s Mystery Photograph was taken?
Each week, the Journal invites readers to identify a historic location from days gone by.
Last week we featured an image from Radstock Museum which attracted quite a few comments with a phone call from Tony Clarke to say: “High Littleton looking towards Hallatrow and Paulton.”
We had lots of readers guessing on the Facebook post too. John Yeo simply commented: Farrington Gurney?” while Eddy Maundrill agreed saying: “It's Farington Gurney just how I remember it when I was a kid.”
Nigel Parfitt, Nick Candy both guessed Farrington Gurney with Jackie Gay adding, that it was a long time ago. Susan Maggs also said: “Yes, my thoughts too - Farrington Gurney. Martin Kemp, Caroline Latchem and Johanna Edwards all agreed too.

Myra Coles suggested “Looks a bit like Radstock Hill”, while Richard Grace suggested “Bridgwater 2026” which gained a like! Good try Richard!
So the majority are correct. It is indeed Farrington Gurney village from around 1910 so yes, Jackie Gay, a long time ago.
According to information from Farrington Gurney Parish Council, Farrington Gurney is rural village located at the foot of the Mendip Hills within the North East of Somerset.
It was registered in the Domesday book, Ferentone. As in many instances place names derive from landowners as in this case, the second part of the name is believed to come from the Gournays, including Robert de Gournay in 1225.
When Sir Thomas de Gournay was implicated in the murder of Edward II at Berkeley Castle, his estates were confiscated; Farrington was later annexed to the Duchy of Cornwall. The parish was part of the hundred of Chewton.
Thank you for all the guesses. Let’s see how you get on with this week’s image - thanks to Radstock Museum.
