CAN you guess where this week’s Mystery Photograph was taken?

Each week, the Journal invites readers to identify a historic location from days gone by.

Martin Horler was the first to write in: “Not such a mystery this week. It’s Rush Hill at Farrington Gurney. It’s a long drag for a horse. I know, I have driven a horse and carriage up that hill.”

Jenny Jones emailed too: “I believe it’s the top of Rush Hill, Farrington Gurney.”

Jeff Parson got in touch: “Our team was sadly depleted this morning but we are confident that the picture was taken at Rush Hill, Farrington Gurney going southwards.

“From memory, going back some years I recall coming from Welton along the A362 and then turning off to the left into Marsh Lane - a short cut to avoid the junction with the A37 in Farrington.

“This lane exited halfway up the hill just before the cottage in the picture and on its way passed the site of the old Marsh Lane drift coal mine, opened in 1924 and finally closed in 1949 (Collieries of Bristol and Somerset by John Cornwell 2005).”

On Facebook, Paul Radnedge guessed Rush Hill, Farrington Gurney. He commented: “The house is the Lodge and the turning on the left was the old Marsh Lane; that is now the road to Mad Swans and is a dead end now at the A37.”

Peter Spencer-Phillips added: “Used to live there and renamed it from Cliff Lodge (so named as it was the lodge to Cliff Farm, now the golf course) to Rushwood Lodge.

“Farrington Gurney's Master Builder, Peter Watson, built the garage and extensions to the house which was sold in around 2013.”

Andy Matthews said: “Rush Hill, The Chards used to live their in the 70s,” while Roy Latchen added: “My wife used to live at Marsh Lane and used to go to the house up at Rush Hill to see the Chard Family.”
