Midsomer Norton based Somer Valley FM will be joining radio stations across the UK for Local Radio Day this Friday, 25th May.

Local Radio Day celebrates the partnership that exists between radio stations and their listeners and demonstrates the difference that local radio makes to communities. Somer Valley FM is proud to be actively involved in this initiative, which is the brainchild of William Rogers, CEO of UKRD.

William said: “All of us who have a shared interest and enthusiasm for local radio can get together and celebrate what we all do. It is an opportunity to magnify what we are doing on a daily basis.”

Somer Valley FM is planning a special day of shows to celebrate Local Radio Day. The schedule includes Radstock Museum’s show, ‘The Yesterday Programme’, and local pastor, Mike Howell’s lunchtime slot. Regular listener, Rob Thain, who won a prize to appear on the station through the Midsomer Norton and Radstock Rotary Club, gets to choose and talk about his favourite music. Nik Jovcic-Sas will be dropping in to talk about this year’s Midsomer Norton Pride, and listeners can also hear about the school students who are saving toads!

The newsroom, led by Joseph Adams and Reece Moore, will be busy with all the local stories and entertainment guide. Star turn of the day promises to be the Radstock Knitters, who will be hitting the airwaves. All this before regular presenters, Pete Helmore and Pete Bailey, present six hours of non-stop dance, Local Radio Day style.

Somer Valley FM is supported by one hundred volunteers who produce seventy hours of new programmes every week. The station’s longtime manager, Dom Chambers, who also presents the ‘inRadio’ podcast for Radio Today, said: “We are inherently local, from the people we train, to the voices we empower, to the stories we share. It’s wonderful to be part of a day celebrating with friends and colleagues.”

Tune in on 97.5FM DAB and online.
