For many years now, England has enjoyed a reputation of being a nation of dog lovers. Research carried out by the Pet Food Manufacturers Association found that 39% of households own at least one dog, with an estimated ten million owned dogs now living in our country. Dogs can enrich our lives in many ways; they provide companionship, help to reduce stress and through their need for exercise, promote a healthy lifestyle.
It is certainly easy to love our four-legged friends, but with love comes responsibility. As a dog owner, it is a criminal offence to not immediately clear up after your dog has fouled in any open area, with the potential for a fine of £1,000. Sadly, in Midsomer Norton and surrounding areas, an increasing number of residents are expressing concern over the problem of dog fouling. Not only does it look unsightly, it also has serious health implications, causing diseases such as Toxiocariasis. Martine Duggan explains: 'Toxocariasis is caused by a parasite, commonly known as Roundworm. These parasites live in the digestive system of dogs. Eggs can be released in the faeces of infected animals and contaminated soil. If someone ingests infected material, the eggs may hatch into larvae and can lead to Toxocariasis.
"This disease, which can lead to blindness and in some cases death, usually affects children who are between one and four-years-old, because they are more likely to put their hands in their mouths. I know first-hand the dangers, as I once taught a child who lost her sight in one eye as a consequence of accidentally touching dog excrement."
Ryan Maher adds: 'B&NES take this problem very seriously, operating a dedicated dog warden service, with early morning and evening patrols. They advise dog owners to always carry dog poop bags, pick up and dispose of your dog's waste in dual purpose bins, for litter and dog waste and to respect your neighbours and keep your family safe by cleaning up dog waste from your garden. The warden's number is: 01225 394041 or: 07797 806545, call this number to report any incidents."
