The first person not representing a political party in the forthcoming West of England Mayoral Election has thrown their hat into the ring.

Dr John Savage, a businessman and hospital leader, has put himself forward as an independent candidate. Speaking to BBC Radio Bristol, where he announced his candidacy, Dr Savage said he was standing to improve public transport and to reshape the current housing and planning system.

Dr Savage is currently Chairman of the University Hospitals Bristol NHS Trust and the Executive Chairman of Bristol Chamber of Commerce. Currently he is running against Tim Bowles, Conservative, Aaron Foot, UKIP, Darren Hall, Green, Lesley Mansell, Labour and Stephen Williams, Liberal Democrat. The deadline for candidates to announce their intention to stand is 5th April, with the election to be held on 4th May.

Once elected, the Mayor will chair the West of England Combined Authority, working with Bristol’s Mayor, Marvin Rees and Leaders of South Gloucestershire Council, Matthew Riddle and B&NES Council, Tim Warren.
