The recent public meeting held at Midsomer Norton Town Hall for residents to find out more about devolution and how it will affect the local area, has been labelled a success.Despite it being one of the ‘drier’ subjects, the Community Trust, which organised the event, was keen to make sure
residents were engaged with the subject, which, if approved, could change the way decisions are made in the West of England and see more power handed down from Westminster.
Speaking about the event, Alex Davis, from the Community Trust, said: “We were pleased to see local people engaging with big issues again at the Town Hall – especially as it wasn’t perhaps as politically ‘glamorous’ and appears more ‘dry’ than the EU referendum in June or the General Election last year.”
The event was attended by B&NES Council Leader, Tim Warren. He said: “It was a successful event, and I was pleased to see so many residents and members of the Chamber of Commerce attend. A lot of good questions were asked and I believe most found it very informative and understood the future benefits that could come about.
“I am grateful to all those that took the time to attend and better understand the potential deal.”Midsomer Norton Town Council has recently resolved to respond positively to the proposals and has only commented that it did not agree with the proposed title of ‘Mayor’, as this could be confusing for residents (both Bath, Bristol and Midsomer Norton have one). As part of the deal, the Government would like to see Elected Mayors put in place for accountability.
