In October, four conscientious Somervale students provided a public service which caught the attention of Sergeant Geoff Cannon, from Avon and Somerset Constabulary.

The four students, Jed Gibbs and Jacob Edwards (Year 7 students) and Cameron Sage and Thomas Manley (Year 8 students) were confronted with a set of traffic lights that had stopped working in the centre of Paulton. The boys used their initiative to attempt to contact the traffic light company and then subsequently called 101 to ask the emergency services for help.

Due to their quick actions, PCSO Kate Humphreys quickly arrived on the scene to be confronted by a long line of stationary traffic. The four boys, under the direction of PCSO Humphreys, helped to control the traffic and adjusted cones and bollards to ease the flow of traffic. PCSO Humphreys commented on the boys' assistance and quick thinking: "They were extremely helpful and I was very grateful."

Avon and Somerset Police Sergeant Geoff Cannon also added: "The boys' actions show great community spirit and willingness to help solve problems which they had encountered. Well done! I would like to extend my thanks, on behalf of the local Police Team, for their actions."

Somervale School released a statement saying: "We are immensely proud of the actions of the four boys. They are an inspiration to their peers and to the wider community as a whole."
