A local Scout Leader is preparing himself for a gruelling challenge that will hopefully mean a new roof for the group’s hall on Radstock Road.

Group Scout Leader of 1st Midsomer Norton Scouts, Jon Stell, will be taking part in the London Marathon in just a few weeks’ time on 28th April.

Jon told The Journal: “I have been training on and off in the local area since November, making the most of the cycle paths to Bath and Frome. The Two Tunnels is a favourite of mine – as is a challenge up Jack and Jill Hill!

“The only time I have done anything like this before was the Bath Half Marathon, two years ago, so I suppose I am a novice runner in terms of full Marathons!”

Jon’s fundraising is part of a wider plan to continue improvement work and repairs on the hall at Radstock Road, Midsomer Norton.

It was rebuilt in the mid-80s by volunteers, when Jon himself was just a Cub. The group now wishes to open its doors for wider use by the community when it is not being used for Scouting Activities.

The team of dedicated volunteers have upgraded the kitchen and toilets over the last few years, but now need to replace or repair the leaking roof. Jon is running to kick-start the fundraising for this venture, named ‘Run for the Roof’, with the cost expected to be around £8,000.

Jon adds: “Having never done anything like this before, I hope that my body and mind will last the distance, especially with the added pressure of raising money for a cause really close to me.

“However, I am really looking forward to the run and am going with the intention of enjoying myself, soaking up the atmosphere and raising money that will hopefully

benefit many young people.”
