Readers may remember the story we featured of Debbie Saffin, who will be taking part in the RUH's hike through Northern India at the end of October in aid of the RUH's Cancer Care Campaign. As we expected (and it didn't take long), with revived legs from her Great Wall of China challenge, Journal Editor, Becky Brooks, has decided she will be joining the team of eighteen, too.

Becky explains: "Having completed the China trek last September with an amazing group of people, I have been involved with the RUH ever since and began helping to recruit trekkers for this year's India trek – and lo and behold, I am now signed up! In the beginning, I didn't really intend for another challenge.

"I received such incredible support from everyone last year, raising over £7,100, for which I am very grateful. This year, I am self-funding the entire trip, as I expected to mainly be going along in support, but if anyone would like to donate, it would be very welcome – and I will be organising a few low-key events and helping other trekkers to raise money during this year.

"For this year's challenge, I will particularly be walking for someone very dear to me, who is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment. She is my inspiration.

"There are so many people out there living with cancer. It is a horrible condition – indiscriminate, nasty, awful. A brand new Cancer Centre at the RUH is desperately needed and its approach will, like the new Neo-Natal Unit, be a holistic one, something I fully subscribe to.

"Personally, I can't wait for the day when the ribbon is cut and we can declare this state-of-the-art building open. It could really change the way in which cancer is treated locally, with a highly beneficial healing environment for patients and families.

"So, I will be off again – flying for ten hours, catching sleeper trains, being without a shower for five days and camping (something I've never done before). If that isn't worth donating a couple of pounds for, then I don't know what is!"

The group's challenge begins in Delhi, travelling on an overnight train to Pathankot, with a long coach journey to Dharamsala and trekking up to eight hours a day to Triund, Laka Got and Bhagsu Nag. The route will explore the foothills of the Himalayas from the heart of the Dalai Lama's Tibetan community in Dharamsala.

Becky's first fundraiser is this Friday evening at Mardon's Social Club – where club members, Jamie Long and Glyn Young, have kindly offered to host another 'Ted's Big Quiz'. The event has a 7.30 p.m. for prompt 8 p.m. start, with teams of 4–6 and prizes for the winners and runners-up. There will also be a raffle. Enter your team by email: [email protected]">[email protected] The social club can be accessed via Hazel Terrace or Lynton Road.

The Journal team will also be holding another cake sale on Friday, 22nd May – all welcome to join us at the Business West offices from 10.30 a.m. With the help of Boogie Bounce Instructor, Becky Woodland, there is also an event being planned at Paulton Rovers on Saturday, 5th September. Watch this space!
