Somer Valley FM’s 6 Week Challenge is back and with Sirona Care and Health on board, it will be our biggest one yet. Launching on Monday, 4th January, this year’s challenge will be themed on the Five Ways To Well-being; Connect, Be Active, Take Notice, Keep Learning and Give.

The idea was originally the brainchild of Somer Valley FM volunteer, Sue Roberts, she said: “I tend to put things off, I needed a way to help me finish goals I set myself for the year. Doing challenges with a group of others makes us accountable and that encourages us all to get there.”

The 6 Week Challenge has always done well with creative initiatives, as well as encouraging better physical and mental well-being. Previous challenges include writing a novel, learning conversational German, charity fundraising, learning how to edit videos, distance swimming, growing a beard and spending more time with friends. Early takers on the next challenge want to run the Bath Half Marathon for Swallow charity and writing a song to perform on Somer Valley FM.

Partnering Sirona will bring a range of resources and networks which will enable the project to treble the engagement of challenges to at least 150. Staff and volunteers from Somer Valley FM and Sirona will work together to support the challenges. Plans are in place for an innovative, ground breaking idea that will link older and younger people, working together, through community radio.

Somer Valley FM’s station manager, Dom Chambers, said: “I am delighted that we are working with Sirona to build on this fantastic initiative now in its fifth year. Bringing together professional health and care support, with Somer Valley FM’s proven ability to positively impact on individuals and audiences, will be a potent mix that will broaden the reach of 6 Week Challenge”

Julie Harrington, Sirona’s Healthy Lifestyle Lead in the Somer Valley, said: “The Healthy Lifestyle team from Sirona are really excited to be working with Somer Valley FM on this innovative project to help improve the well-being of all residents of the Somer Valley and across Bath and North East Somerset. Working together, we can promote the key messages of health improvement and in particular, encourage people to focus on the five ways to well-being”

Simon Allen, Sirona’s Social Care Champion, said: “The 6 week Challenge is a great opportunity for people of all ages to focus on their well-being. We really want people from all walks of life and stages in life to think of a challenge that is meaningful to them. So why don’t you can take part in the 6 Week Challenge; try something new, do something for you and tell us all about it.”

Somer Valley is looking for people to sign up with their challenges before the big launch on Monday, 4th January 2016. Selfie cards have been printed to write your challenge and upload a picture onto the website.
