PUPILS at Peasedown St John Primary School recently took part in their annual ‘Spring Concert’, performing a range of musical pieces as part of the school’s music programme.

Parents, grandparents, carers, and invited community representatives were welcomed into the school to watch a programme of musical performances, providing pupils with the opportunity to demonstrate the skills they have developed through the school’s music curriculum.

School headteacher, Ruth Noall, said: “Well done to all our musicians who took to the stage for our annual Spring Concert last week. We had ensemble performances from the school orchestra, the Year 6 Stings Group and the school choir.”

Each class receives weekly music lessons from a specialist teacher in the school’s well-equipped music room. All pupils have the opportunity to learn an instrument, with options extending beyond the traditional recorder or keyboard to include brass instruments, drum kits, violins, guitars, piano, flutes, fifes, and clarinets.

“We offer a thriving orchestra and choir as free extra-curricular opportunities,” added Ruth. “These groups perform at whole-school and community events. Our Year 6 pupils also have the chance to join a weekly instrumental group, where they receive tuition and experience playing as part of an ensemble.”

Throughout the year children in every age take part in musical performances including Harvest festivals, Christmas nativity plays, community carols and the hugely successful summer production.

They also perform in a range of venues from the school halls to local churches, the Forum in Bath and the theatre at Writhlington or Hayesfield.

Every other year, pupils in the school choir take part in the Young Voices event, travelling to an arena in Birmingham to perform as part of a choir made up of thousands of children.
