A Community Science Fair is coming to St Mary’s Primary School in Timsbury after a parent came up with the idea to help the children and the wider community engage with science.
The fair has been set up by Jenny Scott, who works at the University of Bath, and has children at St Mary’s School, and will take place on 11th March. She said: “The St Mary’s Primary Science Fair will have visiting scientists, engineers and others, mainly from the University of Bath, from across the Science and Engineering faculties,
including Team Bath Racing and the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology.
“We also have some ‘mathletes’ coming as well as companies, including Wessex Water and BMT. The B&NES Recycling team, Sirona, Eco-wild, Writhlington School’s Orchid Project and several parents acting in a personal capacity will also make an
appearance, plus I am hoping the Institute of Physics are coming. The day will also have a very special guest, Dr Andrew Ross, from theUniversity of Bath, who holds the Guinness World Record for the fastest production of ice-cream. He will be doing a live chemistry demo!”
Children at St Mary’s will also have the opportunity to show off their science skills by showcasing some of their science work. A competition and prizes for the best science learning log challenge, which children from St Mary’s are currently working on, will also be included.
Jenny continued: “I came up with the idea after judging at a Science Fair in Bradford- on-Avon and thought it would be a fun and exciting community event. The aim is to get children excited about science and in particular, we are keen to show girls that science, engineering and tech is for them just as much as it is for boys.
“We want anyone interested to come along, not just the children of St Mary’s. Children from other schools and their families are
welcome, as are the people of Timsbury and surrounding area. We have chosen 11th March as it is the start of British Science week. Some will be using it as a warm-up for the Bath Taps Into Science fair the following weekend.”
The PTA will also be fundraising, with refreshments and usual attractions, such as face painting. Entry is free, with doors opening at 10 a.m. For details, visit: www.stmarystimsbury.co.uk
