Final year pupils of Stanton Drew Primary School came together at The Causeway, in Stanton Drew, to plant bulbs that will help make the hedgerows bloom for years to come.

Over a thousand snowdrop bulbs were bought with the money kindly donated by the Community Café, Parish Council and Parishioners.

Instead of holding the annual community litter pick, Stanton Drew village resident, Shirley Edwards, came up with the plan for the final year pupils of the primary school to come together and make their mark on the village before they leave for secondary school.

Shirley told the Chew Valley Gazette: “Pete, my partner, and helpers dug the holes for the snowdrop bulbs so that the Year Six pupils could come and plant the bulbs, giving them something to say farewell to the village school for.

“It is lovely to do something for the community and great that we could do something

different to other years.

“We started this initiative in 2019, with the rest of Stanton Drew School, where we planted daffodils opposite the school – so I decided that it would be lovely to have the final year pupils finish the project off.

“The children will be able to see the snowdrops along the Causeway for years to come, and maybe even when their children are at the school.

“I wanted to work with the school to get the children out in the village. It is really all about nature, being outside and being able to enjoy the beautiful seasonal flowers.”

Deputy Headteacher of Stanton Drew Primary School, Andy Marriott, was amongst the Year Six pupils. He told The Gazette: “We are so grateful for Shirley and Pete as they work so hard to integrate the school into the village and always reach out to us with project ideas for the children.

“It is such a pleasure for us to work with them and to be outside and make an impact. We are the little school with the big heart and are so happy that the children were able to participate in the planting of these bulbs and leave their legacy in the village.”
