Clutton man Tony Tanner cycled for over 17 days from Lands end to Wadebridge, Barnstaple, Bridgewater, Bristol, Hereford, Shrewsbury, Newton, Morecambe, Carlisle, Scotland, Dumfries, Ayr, Dunoon, Oban, Fort Augustus, Alness, Altnaharra to Dunnet, then to John o'Groats.

That’s 603 miles as the crow flies or 1,057 by this cycle - and a total climb of 52,100 feet!

Tony said: “I was very nervous at the start, cycling through areas which were new to me, but after a few days I got into a rhythm. Day two and three, cycling through the Devon and Exmoor area was quite tough due to the elevation of the rolling hills.

“Every day I had to push myself and the last day seemed the toughest as it was 82 miles to John O'Groats but when I finished I was buzzing but very tired.

“Cycling through Scotland was absolutely stunning, I was very lucky with the weather, and managed to avoid the country’s heat wave, as it was cooler in the west and north of Scotland.

"I was supported by my lovely wife Lee and my dog Alfie and we stayed in Air-BnBs on the way.”

Incredibly, Tony managed to raise £2,800 for charity, from over 100 donations. He is thankful, and expecting to raise more from this and future expeditions.

Many brave individuals take on this hairy route every year, to raise money for a number of good causes, and this is not Tony's first venture along the route either. It is strongly advised by the medical community to train properly before cycling for events like this to keep fit and active.
