Information is being sought by the police this week as vandals have caused hundreds of pounds of damage to seats at the Norton Hill Recreation Ground on Fosseway Road, in Westfield. It is thought that the two benches, which cost over £550 to buy and install, were smashed to pieces with a hammer.
Westfield Parish Council, who are responsible for maintaining and improving the ground, will have to pay for repairs and replacements.
The recreation ground includes a football pitch, pétanque court, play area, tennis court and outdoor table tennis table. It is one of the two Miners Welfare Trust Grounds in Westfield.
Robin Moss, B&NES Councillor for Westfield and Parish Council Vice-Chair, said: "The Parish Council replaced the derelict tennis court a couple of years ago with play equipment and seating, which has been well received and used. It's a real shame that a few can be so selfish in wrecking things for the majority."
Geoff Fuller, Chair of Westfield Parish Council said: "Parish Council income comes from local residents, not Government grants. This is our money that is being wasted by this vandalism."
Both Geoff and Robin are speaking to local police about what action can be taken, but also hope that local residents can help with information. If anyone has any further information, then please phone 101 and report it to the police.
