DRIVERS were left in some confusion after a sign welcoming them to Frome was spotted in Midsomer Norton.

The sign, which reads ‘Welcome to Frome’, was placed near the roundabout on the B3355 between Midsomer Norton and Paulton.

The sign swapping is not the first of its kind in the South West of England, with similar incidents being noted back in March regarding nearby Camerton, whose sign was moved to Bradford-On-Avon in Wiltshire.

There was also an instance of a sign in Kilmersdon having also gone the other way, having now been spotted in Frome.

The sign in Midsomer Norton now appears to have been removed.

A spokesperson for Somerset Council said: “We are aware of this latest incident and remind those involved that this is an act of criminal damage which will need to be repaired at public expense. If residents see something like this happening they should contact the police.”

A statement from Frome Town Council said: “It costs time and money to resolve this sort of thing - and it looks as though the sign has been damaged in transit.

“If anyone is in Midsomer Norton and willing to bring our sign home for the rangers to reinstate, give us a call on 01373 465757”
