The Camerton and Peasedown Croquet Club’s flamingos recently met Taunton Dean’s golden labrador during the South West Federation High Handicap League match. Having sniffed out the competition, the dog retreated to her mistress for reassurance.

The rest of her team needed no such support; by midday they led 7–3. However, after lunch, a rejuvenated CPCC team swept to victory 11½–8½ to complete a relaxed, amicable match in the sunshine.

The AC team also had another success in the SWF AC league, this time, against East Dorset, winning 4–1. They have now won all their matches this season.

CPCC’s high handicap team were the real underdogs against Budleigh Salterton; last year’s league champions, who can boast never having been beaten in the league. With eleven immaculate lawns tended by a permanent groundsman and a gentle sea-breeze wafting onto the Dorset coast, the venue was awe-inspiring.

After the first round of doubles, CPCC were 1–3 down but beginning to gauge the speed of the lawns. By lunch they had pulled back to an unexpected 6–6. Lunch can also be a weapon of a croquet club’s armoury; for after three full courses, anything is possible. The score eventually reached 10–9 to the home team. CPCC had to win the last game to draw the match.

Initially, CPCC managed to maintain a small lead, but the opponent levelled the score at 6–6. The final golden hoop was needed; only minutes left on the clock. With neither CPCC balls in a scoring position, the opponent’s long shot missed by millimetres. A delicate tap left saw CPCC’s ball in the hoop’s jaws. Two more long shots from the opponent to push the CPCC ball out whistled passed. Game over – hands were shaken, the timer buzzed.

CPCC had won the game. The match was drawn, a just result, letting Budleigh Salterton keep their unbeaten record. A return home match threatens.
