Not the best week’s bowling for Norwest! Out of six games, we lost three, won two and one was abandoned.
The first two losses were Ladies League games played against Street and Purnell and the only thing I can say in our favour is that we did manage to get two points out of each game. Getting the bad news over first, the other defeat came on Friday in an MMSL game against Fosseway, but there was no consolation here, as we lost all twelve points. The abandoned game was a friendly against our old friends from Alexandra Park, and it was a case of rain stopping play, however, everyone soon dried off in the clubhouse and enjoyed the rest of the afternoon, along with a few drinks and much banter.
Now for the good news: On Wednesday, after some confusion as to where they were actually playing, Paulton’s Men joined ours for a friendly game on our green. It was a good game and gave Norwest the first win of the week by 25 shots. Our second win, again for the boys, was in the County League East, when our B team played against Bath C. This game was played on the same afternoon as the abandoned game, but as it was a league game, the lads struggled on, even though the weather was atrocious and full marks must go to both teams for their tenacity. Our boys claimed eleven of the twelve points on offer. Well done boys, great result.
Now for Sunday and the Monica Trophy competition and what a good one it was this year. We had all rinks in action and it was nice to see lots of our newer members out on the green having a go. We missed Mike, our usual scorer, who was away for the weekend, but Brian, his stand-in, did an excellent job, thanks Brian. Thanks also to all who helped with equipment, served behind the bar and those who just came along to watch, your support was much appreciated. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, even if the competition was fierce at times. It was a lovely afternoon weather-wise and it was great to have some background music supplied courtesy of the fair on the football ground. After a Round Robin Knockout League, the players were eventually whittled down to two finalists who were Ron Bryant and our youngest member, nine-year-old Jack Vine. It was a nail-biting final which saw Ron come out this year’s winner. Congratulations, Ron and thanks to all the bowlers who turned up to make the 2016 Monica Trophy contest such a great success.
